The problem with Kavan is not in the horde of social issues it tries to bring to the limelight. The manner in which the film is presented makes the try look pretentious just like the media it portrays. Even Vijay Sethupathi’s presence doesn’t save this one from sinking.
Yaman sets itself up to a very high expectation with all the set pieces and intertwined subplots of action and revenge. With the actors performing at their tempo, the story proceeds and ends logically. However, without the primary emotional reveal to the protagonist, the ending does not provide fulfillment.
With just a couple of characters, Nila manages to keep you engrossed and take you on a journey of love, pain, guilt and loneliness. The technically masterful film literally transports you into their world and makes you invest in the lives of the characters with minimal usage of dialogues. Such an assured debut is rare and Selvamani & Team certainly deserve the plaudits!
