In 1930, a little known Yugoslavian soccer team arrives in Uruguay to take part in the inaugural FIFA World Cup. The young team creates quite the interest by upsetting Brazil in the first round. When an American tries to lure in vulnerable players with lucrative contracts, the team spirit takes a hit. One of the players gets romantically involved with a local woman whose family try to prevent him from playing the semi-finals against the hosts. An interesting sequence of events thereafter forms the rest of the movie.

What’s Hot

  • Taking into account the movie is based on a real life event in soccer history, the screenplay from the director Dragan Bjelogrlić is pretty awesome to have shown just the right amount of on field action with equal portions to capture the emotions and distractions of the young team on tour for the first time and tasting big success for the first time as well.
  • The semi-final clash with the hosts and the scenes building up to that are truly a class apart for being able to successfully show the craze among fanatics of the sport and is sure to relate to the past of quite a few of them. The cinematography of the on field action is such a pleasure to watch for its seamless movements.
  • A string of graceful performances from the actors with Miloš Biković as Tirke, the love stricken soccer player leading from the front, make this movie a great watch. Especially, Branko Đurić as Paco, the hilarious jester sets off a laughter spree with his impeccable timing.
  • The music scored by Roberto Magnifico has been composed in a manner extremely well suited to the Mediterranean theme of the movie. The energy can be felt well as it underlines most of the important scenes in the movie.

What’s Not

  • The treatment provided to the romantic angle between Tirke and Dolores seemed to be ended prematurely after all the emotions at play and the good amount of screen time devoted to show how their relationship developed.
  • Some of the stray scenes featuring Petar Strugar and the team’s general apathy towards the poor kids and the group of neglected people with communicable diseases was not a convincing addition considering their insignificant impact on the main story.
