Sthreepart (Tamil, 2016) | Short Film Review

Sthreepart is an ambitious short film that talks primarily about the various types of women documented in literature and the way women are forced to react to dominating men. At 40 minutes long, the short film is quite engaging in spite of cutting across various time frames cleverly moving the story forward constantly.

Kabali (Tamil, 2016)

This is not a movie for the die-hard Rajni fans expecting their hero to whoop the baddies, bring the roof down with his comic sense or play the universe savior – but this is one for those who would love to see Rajni in a matured role that prognosticates his abilities on screen - what the star is capable of at this stage of his career in a well-presented story. Is our movie-watching public mature enough to understand and accept that this is one of the better performances of a star who does more than enough even without doing what he usually does? – that is something that the money coffers will answer.

Raman Raghav 2.0 (Hindi, 2016)

Anurag Kashyap’s Raman Raghav 2.0 is always going to polarize opinions due to the raw, dark and gritty content on screen. The film breaks conventional serial-killer tropes by not validating his kills or delving much into the background of the killer. It is certainly worth a watch for Nawaz’s virtuoso performance, fabulous music and some terrifically twisted writing by Anurag Kashyap & Vasan Bala.

Vetrivel (Tamil, 2016)

Vetrivel is that common man you might find in every village – moderately educated, a good samaritan, helps people at the drop of a hat, loves his family, willing to sacrifice beyond belief to keep his loved ones happy and capable of turning into a mean-machine if his own people are in harm’s way. However, in spite of such a predictable protagonist, the film shines due to some excellent writing, well-rounded character arcs and the absence of superfluous elements, making it a worthy watch.
