A glance at our top ten would reflect we have gone by content & not by box-office performance to arrive at our 2014 Top 10. However, these are not the only ten films that had something to be spoken about which is why we have come up with a detailed summary on the noteworthy releases of 2014 and the reasons why they were The Good, The Bad & The Ugly!
A movie that starts off like it might be just another romantic flick takes an interesting turn once Aamir Khan’s screen presence is felt and turns into a mirror of our society posing some really interesting (read tough) questions. It sure conveys a message that does make one think about his/her beliefs and the importance that we have given middlemen who act as intermediaries between God and the masses, ending on the need to foster humanity.
Three of the five episodes in Aaaah may have worked as separate short films but put together, they fail to create a fearful impact thanks to limited screen time for each. The team, however, has not failed in its attempt from staying away from being pedestrian and can be backed for a better outing in the future.
Breezy Romance, Suspicious deaths, Supernatural interactions, Delusional inferences, Greedy humans and a chaotic canvas to unravel the suspense - ‘Ra’ is the perfect concoction of them all and yet you will be kept busy playing the guessing game!
It is an emotionally uplifting tale of a great physicist & his wife who selflessly travels with and for him in his journey over time for his passion for sciences that helps him in defying the very laws of science that limit his mobility.
Foxcatcher is a welcome addition to the Sports Brothers drama tales from Hollywood & in exploring the inner-wrestling of the mind, it adds another catchy dimension. Add to that splendid showings from the lead cast, you get a film that arrests you.
The quarter that went by had an eclectic mix of films. Vijay’s Deepavali release Kaththi & Rajinikanth’s Birthday release Lingaa were hugely star driven. While the former turned into a superhit, the latter received mixed response. Director’s films that were looked forward to from the quarter were Vasantha Balan’s Kaaviyathalaivan, Mysskin’s Pisaasu & Prabhu Solomon’s Kayal. The first two didn’t disappoint. The quarter also featured what has now become a trademark – Films from new directors/actors that attempt to break away from stereotypes. Of this lot, Lakshmi Ramakrishnan’s Nerungi Vaa Muthamidaadhe & Caarthick Raju’s Thirudan Police clicked!
A realistic emotional rollercoaster based on a true event - with many heart warming moments and fabulous performances that will remain in you long after the movie ends.
Mr.Kaplan is an amusing ride of an aged man & a darling ex-cop as they aim to redefine their respective average lives. Fantastic out-of-the-box situations coupled with the crowd-pleasing antics of the two leads make this a film that you will certainly not regret watching.
A poignant tale with 3 plots colliding, that deserves a watch for the wonderful performances from all the actors.
