Sathya, an amateur police officer from Chennai is assigned to investigate strange supernatural incidents reported from a small village, Ayanpuram which had witnessed cruel governance during the British rule. On his arrival and over the course of the investigation, he falls for Viji, the beautiful daughter of the village headman. What’s Hot

  • ‘Nan Kadavul’ Rajendran evoked the most cheers from the crowd and rightly so for he towered over the father-son duo of Sathyraj and Sibi Sathyaraj, with his swag and slick mannerisms that had everyone in splits to go alongside his trademark babbles in half-baked English!
  • The Art Direction from T.N. Kabilan is quite a marvel for having crafted the haunted mansion with exquisite detailing to aptly suit to the pre-independence period setting. The costumes designed by the director Dharani Dharan himself were works of fine craftsman ship as well, while we felt the make-up could have been subtler.
  • The rich frames on screen, the handiwork of Yuva are on par with the cinematography of popular horror films. Though we have to admit an overdose of slow motion shots to emphasise the lead characters, there were a substantial number of impressive ones that caught the attention too!

What’s Not

  • Supposed to be a Horror-comedy, the comedy turned out to be horrible and the horror, way too comic! The balance was totally lost towards the end when even the tested success of repeat dialogues couldn’t be reaped unlike how Velainnu Vanthutta Vellakaran managed with ease. When Yogi Babu and Karunakaran seem restrained, you got to know it’s not working!
  • Sibi Sathyaraj and Bindu Madavi had literally nothing going between them and even a forced love angle couldn’t put their chemistry out of its misery. They were seen in the same frame in only a handful of the scenes and she is reduced to being just a timekeeper during the ‘Challenge’ in the second half.
  • The movie starts off with an air of spoof around the narration including the character build up and maintains it to some extent with the supernatural encounters until it reaches midway. The second half falls apart as the movie tries to be many things including attempts to be patriotic and sympathetic! Such a confused execution made the flawed aspects of the movie stand out among the rest.

Verdict

Verdict Stamp

Despite the visual appeal courtesy of stellar shows from the art, cinematography and costume departments, the lack of a purposeful narrative fails to back them up with the mediocre execution making Jackson Durai a grand mess!
