What’s Hot

  • The film’s no-nonsense screenplay and direction by Paul Greengrass, who has taken Robert Ludlum’s fictitious hero to a different level in Cinema with the series, is a big plus as it doesn’t waver one inch from its main course – there are no branching stories and no time for any romance or wit.
  • Matt Damon’s calm, cool and serious demeanour that has defined Jason Bourne stays intact in this edition as well. The presence of Alicia Vikander is a welcome addition and she is as good in acting (how she handles the huge deceit thrown at her) as she is with her looks in the film.
  • Tommy Lee Jones (even in an atrocious caricature-like makeup) plays the conniving CIA agent with personal agenda well & Vincent Cassel’s ruthless ‘Asset’ character is exactly that to the film’s action.
  • Dialogues play a role in holding our attention together in the film where action happens at frenetic pace – especially in the sequence involving Doowey & the CEO of Deep Dream (Talking of that, shout-out to the casting director for choosing someone bearing a striking semblance to Sundar Pichai for the role)
  • Powell/Buckley’s music has a recurring theme which is a solid track propelling the film and in Barry Ackroyd’s camera and an able VFX effort, we are let to stay with the players in the lightning fast chases

What’s Not

  • The story is wafer-thin and doesn’t have enough ammunition in it for us to take the film for analysis or discussion long after we are out of it. Whatever it has, is also a tried and tested template storyline that Hollywood has given us time and again.
  • The climax car chase (or Truck chase?!) is way too long and implausible that beyond a length, you start joking around about the proceedings – They could very well have gone directly to the fist fight!

Verdict

Verdict Stamp

Jason Bourne doesn’t come with a compelling narrative which lessens the overall impact considerably but the no-nonsense main track of the film with its pulsating action blocks (except the climax) save the film and let it tick the 'Action Entertainer' box.
