What’s Hot

  • Anurag Kashyap the director is in his brilliant best, hitting the sweet spot with this movie. He has managed to stay true to a suspense thriller with some spellbinding writing and direction. The way he has told the story in the screen, switching back and forth between present & past events is something new directors would envy.
  • If Anurag got people moving with his screenplay and direction, on the other side, cinematographer Nikos Andritsakis has made the movie move seamlessly. We see some crisp camerawork in portraying the dark side of human nature. Watch out for the portrayal of greed, especially!
  • Tejaswini, playing a house-arrested present wife of Ronit Roy (who plays a cop) & Rahul Bhat are the quintessential cogs in this wheel and they have all performed really well. There is some realistic portrayal worth calling out from Vineet Kumar Singh & Girish Kulkarni.
  • The dialogues are a class apart. Since this is a story where we are talking about abduction and that of a father and stepfather who is a cop, there are some wonderful exchanges between them during case investigations.
  • A suspense thriller will need to be crisp and concise and that is exactly what editor Aarti Bajaj has managed to do. She has made sure that the element of surprise is felt throughout the movie & viewers need to be on the edge of their seat to keep pace with what unfolds.
  • Last but not least, G V Prakash Kumar and Brian McOmber have managed to add that icing in the cake that is Ugly! They have given the surprise element a distinctive touch with their music to add value to complement the brilliant shot-making

Why did Anurag Kashyap christen this lovely film Ugly? Probably to stress that solutions to problems lie not so far from us. Is it valid only for the story or also for the darker side of the human emotion? Even though the former is inspired by real events, keen eyes on this movie will make the latter weigh more!
