Charles Shaffiq Karthiga (Tamil, 2015)

CSK comes as a neatly written thriller film that makes the viewing experience enjoyable even as a better screenplay could have filled in the otherwise impenetrable effort made by the crew. Though there are some questionable sections in the film, on the whole, it is a commendable job done by the cast and crew.

Baahubali – The Beginning (Telugu, 2015)

S. S. Rajamouli has managed to produce a mighty masterpiece, scaling high in all areas that one can expect him to. If Magadheera was all about his story telling skills, Baahubali is more proof of what he can do with serious technical brilliance at his disposal. This will definitely rank as one of the path-breakers in Indian Cinema and a priceless feather in the caps of all those associated with the movie

With the onset of a good number of path breaking cinema making its way to mainstream, Mollywood is the place to be for new and aspiring talent. The same applies to a self-proclaimed movie buff that I am who initially did not indulge into Malayalam cinema, owing to language barrier but slowly learning to overcome it with the increasing trend of subtitling for regional movies.

Our Picks from Q2 2015 : Tamil Films

or Kollywood, the 3 months that went by can be considered a stint of high quality offerings. There were releases from 2 of the most respected upper-echelon members of the fraternity – Kamal Haasan & Mani Ratnam. To top that, the period also came close to seeing the release of two National Award winning films. One released & became the talk of the town (Kaaka Muttai). There was also a train of blink-and-you-miss releases, which has become the k-town norm. The other highlight was the Horror/Horror-comedy genre getting even more popular with 2 such releases. The summary wouldn’t end if we were not to mention the comeback of Jyothika!

Yaagavarayinum Naa Kaakka (Tamil, 2015)

‘Yaagavarayinum Naa Kaaka’ is a movie with a decent core story on friendship faced with unfortunate circumstances, which is provided a topsy-turvy treatment. In one line, YNK is an extrapolated on-screen depiction of Superstar Rajni’s popular dialogue: 'Anger is the cause of all miseries; one should know how to control it. Otherwise life would become miserable' – A bittersweet presentation at that!
