Following Masaan, debutant filmmaker Shubhashish Bhutiani’s Hotel Salvation is another indie gem with the fabulous Varanasi as its backdrop. Restrained performances and witty writing makes this an enjoyable roller-coaster of emotions.
Movies like Dangal are more of an experience than just a watch. Revolutionaries are spirited individuals who had the courage to face adversity head on and inspire change. To state that Mahavir inspired Geeta and Babita to fight their opponents just inside the ring would be an understatement. The Dronacharya award stands testament to this!
There can be movies celebrating women for what they are. But Pink differs in a sense where it silently pierces the grim realities of society as a slow penetrating needle, albeit to show sense and justice prevail in a socially outgoing world of today. Pink by its name, but touches grey areas of our society.
'Island City' has a very modern theme on how automation has taken control of humanity in a big city like Mumbai. To make such a theme resonate across three distinct chapters, within 110 minutes with a small connection between each of them, is no mean feat. Go watch this brilliant work!
Anurag Kashyap’s Raman Raghav 2.0 is always going to polarize opinions due to the raw, dark and gritty content on screen. The film breaks conventional serial-killer tropes by not validating his kills or delving much into the background of the killer. It is certainly worth a watch for Nawaz’s virtuoso performance, fabulous music and some terrifically twisted writing by Anurag Kashyap & Vasan Bala.
Udta Punjab is an extremely well made mainstream film that deals with the drug-addiction epidemic plaguing the state of Punjab. The way the drug-smuggling mafia is unraveled amidst the travel of a 4 varied characters across Punjab without any loss of the engagement factor, shows the strong writing behind the core theme.
While it is fairly common to have a pleasant or even a shocking family drama, it is extremely rare to see Kapoor & Sons, a thrilling family drama that too in the mainstream space with established actors. The film doesn’t have a protagonist or an antagonist but embraces the differences between characters whole-heartedly giving a fabulous experience as a whole.
Tamasha is another addition to one of those breezy and light Imtiaz Ali trademark movies; just that it does not create the impact that his old movies did. Slick, power-packed performances by Ranbir & Deepika and A R Rahman’s scores are not enough to hold a crumbling screenplay.
Airlift in all its essence is like a well-oiled machine. With a gripping real-life story and a narrative as nail biting as it can get, it is surely a winner, for it has all the essentials that a thriller needs.
Wazir tells the story of a weak pawn(Omkar) taking the help of a strong pawn(Daanish) to bring down the opposition king(Yazaad) like how the fairy piece Wazir does in classical chess. Though simple, it is effective in its storytelling with some packed performances by its cast and crew.
