Karthik, working with the traffic police in Ooty leads a simple and content life with the only aim of providing a decent life for his sister Divya while nurturing a crush on Lakshmi, a doctor. When a street dog accidentally intakes toxic chemical waste, it turns rabid and infects one man who sets off a chain of infections and turns almost everyone into bloodthirsty Zombies. Karthik and Lakshmi’s attempts to reach Coimbatore General Hospital with a team of doctors in search of an antidote for the virus is accounted for in the rest of the movie.

What’s Hot

  • Jeyam Ravi and Lakshmi Menon put in measured performances as they suit a frightened pair on the run with Zombies on their heels. With Lakshmi engaged to another doctor, Ravi’s little acts of jealousy are cute and he scores when he tries to reluctantly express his love for her. Kaali Venkat’s retorts and Sreeman’s scared-out-of-my wits looks still have their charms.
  • D. Imman has had an absolute field day scoring the background score that underline the numerous zombie attacks. The intensity in the “Veri Veri…” song is simple unmatchable and suits the zombie outbreak. “Mirutha Mirutha…” is a level apart for a soulful melody used in contrapuntal style over contrary visuals.
  • The extensive makeup required to make hundreds of men and women into frightening and despicable zombies on screen in nothing short of a marathon effort and the team responsible for this deserve special mention for the fine job they have done to achieve it.
  • In a welcome, move this film achieves a rarity in Indian movies – not splitting the movie into two halves with a customary interval. Though an intermission is included, it is only to give the audience a break without skillful editing and an extremely short run time of just about 100 minutes seems to have helped this purpose as well!

What’s Not

  • First zombie movie in Tamil or not, the story and the treatment to the subject has its flaws which outweigh the positives. The whole way the virus outbreak is established and handled is quite disappointing and used just as a precursor to send anyone not infected on a shoot at sight spree, anyone infected into a zombie trance and the doctors in search of an antidote.
  • No matter how experimental the subject is, no one seems to escape the compulsions of including a romantic episode. Just when last week’s release Jil Jung Juk with an experimental plot seemed to break the norm, this movie indulges it again and proves to be a mere distraction from the main plot just like scores of other formulaic movies doing the rounds.
  • Most of the stunts are insane (even for Zombies who seem to have gained superhuman strength from the virus) like the one where a minivan does multiple 360 degree turns despite having at least 50 zombies clinging to it, while other stunts seem ripped off some popular zombie games.

Verdict

Verdict Stamp

Once the excitement over seeing zombies in Tamil movies subsides after the first few minutes, Mirudhan battles to stay on top as it gets dragged around mercilessly by poor treatment to the subject and cannot be rescued by good work from the other departments before it turns mediocre!
