Selvaraghavan’s magnum opus is a tale of love that spans two worlds interspersed with universal themes. While one is the world that we occupy, the other is a world steeped in fantasy with spellbinding scenery and mythical monsters.

What’s Hot
- Arya’s efforts to beef-up his physique for the second world and his effort in the stunts deserve applause. The way he wields his hammer-like weapon is impressive.
- Anushka looks sharp and alluring in her other-worldly avatar, and her overall presence in the movie is a plus. Her chemistry with Arya is noticeable and their romance on Earth, though ridden with Selvaraghavan cliches, is pretty good.
- Anirudh’s BGM score is the lifeline of the movie and the uplifting work of the Budapest Symphony stands out.
- The visual scale of the movie is really ambitious and it is a riot of colors and extravagant imagery. The celestial beings, in particular, are beautiful to watch on the big screen. Congrats to the VFX team and all the other departments associated with the visuals for this grand effort. Cinematographer Ramji comes across as an unsung hero in such a VFX-heavy movie and his work is magnificent.
- Harris Jayaraj’s songs are lovely to listen to, but the same cannot be said of the way they have been used on screen.
- The ambitious core concept about true love should be appreciated even though it is far-fetched.
What’s Not
- The movie moves at a leisurely pace especially in the second half where the screenplay is devoid of the necessary spikes.
- In spite of his good choice of scripts and effort towards preparing himself physically for any sort of role, Arya’s voice modulation and emoting skills let him down every time.
- Chinmayee’s dubbing for Anushka seems lifeless even though Anushka’s role is scripted that way.
- Selvaraghavan has again omitted a couple of beautiful numbers from the film – Rakkozhi and Vinnaithaandi. This bad habit of ‘chopping’ his composers’ works has stuck with him ever since Pudhupettai (where the mesmerizing and soul-stirring Oru Naalil was not to be seen in the movie!)
- The actor who plays the guardian angel in the other world can give Kristen Stewart a run for her money for being among the most plastic actors around.
