Our Picks from Q1 2014 : Tamil Films

In Kollywood, the beginning of the year (marked by big releases in Pongal & smaller ones over the course of Feb and early March) usually sets the tone for the reminder of the year as films to be released later in the year will only be at pre-production at that time & some huge successes early on can set the tone for those units at work. The quarter usually culminates rather dull owing to its incidence with Board & College exams but that is only for a brief period before the next quarter begins with the holiday season

Those Lesser Known Priceless Characters

As a subsequent addition to our Perspectives page, we have penned our thoughts on the actors who play second fiddle to the protagonists in Tamil cinema, the supporting actors. How often have we seen Kamal Hassan's Sathi Leelavathi. We are stressing Kamal Hassan's name here to highlight the fact that even though it was Ramesh Aravind who played the lead in that movie, which was directed by Balu Mahendra, the onus was on Kamal Hassan's ability to carry that supporting role and take it to where it belongs. To continue on in this road, we can embark upon Iruvar, the Mani Ratnam movie which went on to boast of a star cast which involved the likes of Mohan Lal, Prakash Raj and Aishwarya Rai.

15 Tamil films that stood out in 2013

2013 was an eventful year for Tamil cinema with around 147 releases. Even though very few of them were able to achieve Box-Office success, there were many films that were innovative and steadfast in the quest to be different. Presented here are few films that we at Piping Hot Views consider to be innovative and have some sort of novelty associated with it. As a result of this a certified Box Office Hit like 'Singam 2' will not make it to this list but a film like 'Paradesi' would. The Disruptive Innovations of Venkat Prabhu

An interesting one-liner; a jolly, happening cast involving young guns who have a marked sense of humour; some veteran actors who are made to join the fun; a rock-solid technical crew that is mostly unchanged; a specific template of screenplay involving twists; comedy and action thrown in at seemingly inappropriate places which still clicks with the viewers; an unexpected climactic volte-face.

The Abominable Arm-Chair Critic

The surge in the usage of Internet and the urge for people to tap stuff on their keyboards and keypads and share them with friends has sprung multi-folds in the last few years. 'Crowdsourced' websites are quite popular. In other websites and magazines, there are specific limited columns which encourage views of visitors/readers. Among the pleasant positives this phenomenon has brought about are a few diabolic downturns. One among those is the increasingly growing clout of the 'Arm-chair Critic'. As I am going to base this article on this referential ‘abominable’ person, let me be clear in my definition of who it is, in the context of movies and movie-reviewers.

A model to work for our ‘Mass Heroes’

‘A Separation’ ,the Iranian film that won the coveted Oscar in the foreign language category in the 84th Academy Awards held in 2012, is a film that bowls you over with the simplicity in its plot. It is a subject whose one line can be translated to ‘Ponna pudichu thalli vittaya’ (like the famous ‘ponna kaiya pudichu izhuthiya’ Vadivel joke). In its simplicity, there is a lesson for films from our land. It makes one think about the question on why such films with simple yet tasteful making are not dished out from an otherwise capable Tamil cine-industry. That question could potentially lead to a series of questions and a probable answer to the last question in the chain. More on that below.
