We all know May day is also the birthday of ‘Thala’ Ajith – One of the most celebrated artistes of Kollywood. We know of his famous films, characters & his awards and accolades. So, none of that will feature in our column here. We all know that peers from the industry respect and love him for what he is & we know of his frenzied fan following & how it bursts, both in front of cinema halls & on social media, to unseen levels with every release of his. What we have tried to decipher are the top 5 reasons behind such respect and adulation from fans and peers alike for the individual that is Ajith Kumar.

1. Silence is Golden

It was about a decade back when candid statements of Ajith in interviews were captioned out of context, created sensation & alternatively, resulted in bad publicity for the star. A decision then to go passive with media has struck gold and has become his USP & is a strong reason for reverence. Having said that, he doesn't hesitate in calling spade a spade irrespective of what repercussions it could cause. Ajith is not someone who minces words to please people. Some such instances have given his career nightmarish moments but the man doesn't look like changing himself on that. That is one quality which many admire in him & may even secretly envy him for.

2. Disbanding fan clubs

In a state traditionally known for actor turned politicians, heroes with a clout on the masses use fan clubs (mandrams) as a springboard for success in politics. Ajith is known to have a loyal and intense fan base & that made his move of officially disbanding all his fan clubs a big surprise & a welcome vanguard act. Along with that vanished the 'Ultimate Star' tag as well. Now a number of young heroes who had funny tags against their names are detaching themselves from doing that.

3. A man with varied tastes

The word 'taste' here has got a lot more to do than explaining the quality of the Biriyani & Pastas he is known to cook for his filming units. His passion for motorsports is well known, the pinnacle of his achievements coming through two podium finishes in his stints in Formula Asia & Formula 3 racing. After completing Aasal in 2011, he took a break from movies & went back behind the wheels for competitive racing. His passion for aero-modelling & copter designs is another popular dimension of his. He has had companions from the film industry in the form of Madhavan & actor Jayaprakash who are other known celebs interested in it. These apart, Ajith is known to have had a keen interest in learning professional photography techniques & don't be surprised if a swashbuckling themed photography exhibition from him is to come in the near future for aiding his various philanthropic activities.

4. Progressive learner

In English Vinglish, the small cameo he plays ends with a dialogue

Ippo ennaye eduthukonga; Modhalla en thamizh ah kindal pannaanga, aana ippo? En thamizh Ok la?.

Progressive & marked improvement. He may not be the best actor around but he would definitely be among those who have shown huge progress in different aspects over their acting careers. That is exactly what he has shown all through his career, except for a few years in mid 2000 where he had made some terrible decisions and chose films that didn't offer any scope for him to improve on any areas. He has been an inspiration for a lot of up and coming actors for that reason. Varalaaru, for instance, was a film in which he probably surprised his own self for the Sivashankar role he played in it. He followed that effeminate role up with stylish swagger as the bedazzling Billa next year. He is also one of the very few top stars to have had credits in a film's story & screenplay with his efforts for the film Aasal with Charan.

5. King-maker

Venkatprabhu had wantedly given the dialogue King.. nah, the Kingmaker to Ajith in Mankatha for precisely what he has been. Ajith has been least hesitant in offering films to new directors and catapulting them to fame. Even though some such decisions have backfired, top beneficiaries include SJ Suryah, AR Murugadoss, ‘Kireedam’ Vijay & to an extent, directors like Vishnuvardhan & Venkatprabhu as well. If not for him, these people were talented enough that they would still have made it big but the idea of winning with them is what makes such decisions special. If news reports are to be believed, he has also brought some limping producers back to their glory days & his collaboration with Gautham & AM Ratnam too is said to be a tale of Ajith trying his best to create a win-win for all parties involved.

We wish ‘Thala’ Ajith a happy birthday & hope the years to come offer more instances to add on to the 5 points we have mentioned above. Good luck for your films to come!
